The Lexington Fire Department (LFD) has pinned a badge on Owen Ives, a Veterans Park Elementary fifth grader, as the city’s 2024 junior fire chief.
“We had many excellent submissions, and I’m incredibly proud of Owen for his exceptional poster and essay focused on the importance of smoke detectors. I am excited for Owen to represent VPE,” Principal Molly Dabney said after the brief ceremony.
The Junior Fire Chief Program is one way the LFD’s Division of Community Services educates our community. October is Fire Prevention Month and a busy month for the department, with firetruck visits reinforcing this year’s fire prevention theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you.”
“Fire prevention is the top priority for every fire department, and smoke alarms are the best tool to make your home safer,” said Fire Chief Jason Wells. "Owen’s poster and essay truly caught our attention.”
Owen will tour local businesses and landmarks, participate in media interviews, and attend meetings with Wells, the LFUCG council, and Mayor Linda Gorton as he promotes fire safety and shares his message with a broad audience.
